After Karen obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Columbia University and worked as a registered nurse, she realized that being a patient advocate in the healthcare setting was an uphill battle. From this, Karen decided law school was a better path and used her nursing background to become the patient advocate she envisioned after receiving her law degree from Vanderbilt University.
Karen began practicing law at Robert J. Dickman, P.A. where she remained for more than a decade. While there, Karen’s practice primarily consisted of handling complex medical malpractice cases. Given her nursing background, she excelled at:
Analyzing medical records for areas of concern
Researching medical issues
Communicating with medical experts
Deposing the health care providers whose care was at issue
In 2004, Karen joined the law firm of Donna B. Michelson, P.A., where she handles all types of personal injury cases including those arising from medical negligence. Given Karen’s expertise on the medical side of personal injury claims, she is in tune with patient rights as they relate to insurance, governmental benefits, and access to health care.
Additionally, Karen is a certified mediator, and her alternate perspective is invaluable during settlement negotiations. She is proud to be part of a firm that focuses on educating and empowering clients to fully understand their rights and the legal issues in their cases in order to make sound, informed decisions.
