Why does language matter so much in mediation, and what does a bilingual mediator provide?

Mediation is fundamentally about communication — understanding each party’s concerns, conveying offers accurately, and building the mutual understanding that leads to agreement. When a party is not fully comfortable in English, important nuance can be lost, and a party who cannot fully follow or participate in the discussion may not trust the process or the outcome. A bilingual mediator who can conduct the mediation directly in a party’s own language removes that barrier, allowing the party to speak and be understood without a layer of translation between them and the process.
