Mediator's Profile

William Donahue, Jr.

Business Name: Transitions Mediation Center

A Non-Adversarial Approach to Divorce

By its very nature, litigation is adversarial because it requires a judge to make decisions for the divorcing couple. It forces each party to convince the judge that one side should win and the other should lose. Mediation is different because both parties make the decisions themselves and stop seeing each other as enemies with adverse demands. A mediated divorce is one that maximizes the benefits and minimizes the losses for both people.

William H. Donahue, Jr., Esq., APM, founded Transitions Mediation Center in 1995 to address the growing need for mediation in the Philadelphia and South Jersey area, as an alternative to expensive, time-consuming, and emotionally draining litigation. Mr. Donahue mediates a wide range of family disputes including divorce. Specializing in the mediation of high-conflict cases and cases involving children, he is a master at helping people resolve their divorce issues in a civil manner, so they can get on with their lives.

Admitted to practice law in 1984 in New Jersey and in Pennsylvania in 1989, William also maintains a private litigation practice in South Jersey (Camden, Burlington and Gloucester Counties). His practice includes divorce and family law, domestic violence, and post-divorce cases, as well as personal injury, real estate, wills and trusts.

William is a nationally recognized speaker on family mediation and is often interviewed in local media. His book, Reconcilable Differences: A Consumer’s Guide to Divorce Mediation, uses an easy, non-technical approach to explain the basic principles underlying mediation. The book shares simple examples of couples he’s worked with, and how they were able to use mediation to resolve their divorces and preserve the key relationships in their lives, especially those with children.
